Stratford Connecticut Defeated Washington Pennsylvania Vesta to go to the PONY Bronco World Series
Story by: Max Sanchez-Martinez

On Sunday, June 29, 2007, the first game of the 2007 North East PONY ZONE Bronco tournament was played with no problem between the host team's own Bergen Beach Panthers and the Vesta All-Stars of Washington, Pennsylvania. The host team easily defeated Vesta, which seemed to be nervous from the beginning of the game. However, the second game of the tournament between the Chesterfield All-Stars of Chesterfield, Virginia and the Stratford All-Stars of Washington, Pennsylvania, did not go as smooth as the first game. The officials had to stop the second game of the day, twice, as the thunderous Brooklyn weather refused to subside.

The host, Bergen Beach Youth Organization, refused to discontinue the 2007 PONY Bronco Zone Tournaments on the account of rain. Knowing the quality of the artificial baseball field would remaining in the same condition as it was at the start of the day, the directors of the tournaments confidently adjourned everyone in their vast Sports Complex, where everyone was able to endure the duration of the thunder storms, while they enjoy dinner.

Equipped with four flat screen televisions, the Bergen Beach Sports Complex www.bbyosports.com appeased the anticipated players and their parents, brothers, sisters and friends, who could not wait to get back on the baseball field. The complex could easily accommodate 250 people in its confinement. With more seats outside of the main lunching area, visitors as well as Brooklynite enjoyed the fine cooking of the establishment.

With the rain going on and off, while the game between Vesta and Chesterfield was dragging past 6:30 p.m., the officials decided that the scheduled game between the two winners of earlier would never reach completion by sun set. So, Mother Nature won the battle to the disappointment of the Panthers, which anticipated playing Stratford, despite all the possible humanly efforts of the directors of the ZONE tournament.  Overcoming the ordeal of the rainy day, Chesterfield, similarly to Vesta, battled each other on the losing bracket. And again, after receiving a pounding from Stratford, Chesterfield received a worse pounding from Vesta, which falls to the Panthers, earlier.

On Monday, July 30, 2007, Brooklyn was sunny.

At 72º, Bergen Beach, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. was, again, vibrant. As before the start of each Sunday’s game, the 2007 ZONE official gracefully introduced all the athletes of their respective teams before honoring America and its adored flag with the National Anthem. On top of it all, the host announced every athlete as they go at bat, as the announcer constantly complimented the players on collective and on individual accomplishments.

As in all competitions, there have to be winners and losers. Consequently, the host team, the Bergen Beach Panthers was no match for the Stratford All-Stars.

Entering the day, both undefeated, Bergen Beach and Stratford looked even as in the night, before. Although confident at the start of the game, the Panthers easily fall victims at the hands of Stratford, which outlasted the Panthers in five innings.

Despite their first loss at the hands of Stratford, the Panthers regain their confidence remembering the pounding they administered upon Vesta, the day before. So, Manager Anthony Brennan started his best on the field. However, the host, Panthers, fall short to the Washington, PA All-Stars which advanced to the semifinal of the tournaments against Connecticut, as the Brooklyn team had to retire, contemplating next year with their younger players of the tournament.

With Bergen Beach out of the picture, ZONE Directors, Rich Christie’s, Pat Solomita’s, Ed DaParma’s, and Bob Miller’s successful completion of the ZONE Tournament became easier. Although, their own Panthers team was eliminated from all competitions, the directors put the best display in hosting the ZONE Tournament with a semifinal that easily turned into a championship game.

The championship game, the sixth game of the tournament. With Johnny Amoroso on the mound for Stratford, the Connecticut righty lead his teammates to an amazing pounding of the Vesta pitching. For seven innings, Stratford frustrated Vesta to become the best team in the two days of competition and as the only undefeated team.

Jonny Amoroso, a young amateur athletes of big heart and great determination to be the best he can be, with his dominance of his opponents’ pitching  along  with his outstanding performance on the mound for Stratford, has inspired American Amateur Athletes to create a section of www.amamat.com that will be dedicated to the Most Valuable Players of Tournaments. That section of the website will be named in his honor as the “The Johnny Amoroso MVP” page.

The “The Johnny Amoroso MVP” page will figure amateur athletes who display the same qualities as that of Johnny Amoroso’s in all sports American Amateur Athletes will cover.
