2008 Catholic High Schools Athletic Association Varsity A Baseball Monsignor Mc Clancy vs. Xaverian at Keyspan Stadium

There were a lot of activities at the hot-corner at KeysPan Stadium, as 3rd baseman Roberto Duran (11) of Xaverian had seven chances, including fielding a hard grounder with man in scoring position, in the top of the seventh inning.  However, the pitching matchup dominated the day.

Six-feet- two-inch lefty starter, Stephen Cotov (18), went 5 2/3 innings to win this Catholic High Schools Athletic Association (CHSAA) Baseball League  game for the Mc Clancy Crusaders on this breezy April spring day, at the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. He allowed no run and fanned three batters in the outing.

Cotov got out of trouble twice, in the third and the 4th innings. In the 4th inning, with man on first and second, he pitched out of trouble, as Xaverian Clippers’, Anthony Ajjar (22), hit a one hop grounder inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

The Clippers starter, six-footer, Justin Giammarino (46) was as dandy as his Crusader counterpart. However, he gave up the only run of the day in the second inning.

With one out, Giammarino gave up a hit to Coach Nick Melito’s Crusader, Joseph Herrmann (35), who reached second base on a wild pitch. Herrmann later scored on a single by center fielder, Andrew Power (28). Giammarino avoided another run in the top 3rd inning on an 8-6-2 play that ended the inning. Relief pitcher, Paul Piccirillo also avoided the Clippers further damages in the top of the 7th inning, as he entered the game with man at 2nd base and no out, but shut the Crusaders down 1-2-3.

Although Coach Denis Canale resigned himself to the lost, he would have felt better if his Clippers capitalized on the two-out-bases-loaded bottom 5th inning, as Mc Clancy left fielder, Andrew Stella (26), robbed Joseph Cespuglio (25) of a potential game-tying sinking line-drive that ended the rally. Stella almost overran the baseball, as Will Colomer (24) save the game in relief.
