05.24.08 Iona Prep @ Mount St. Michael -2008 CHSAA VARSITY INTERSECTIONAL QUALIFYING BASEBALL GAMES at St. John's University
#12 Steven Rivera of Mount St. Michael pitched a great game
against Iona Prep. On the brink of elimination, Coach
Wally Stampfel reorganized his team to live another day to
face Iona, once more and his team showed up big.
Rivera stroke out five batters in the seven-inning-outing. He
recorded no run in the first six innings, but got in trouble in
the top of the seventh, as Coach Stampfel challenged his righty
starter to finish the game. And, although he struggled,
Rivera finished the game.
As for Iona, the Gaels lost the game in the bottom of the second
inning, as
Louis Alicea (#24) lead the Mount’s offence with a triple
that cleared the loaded bases, for three RBIs.
As Mount's bats fell silent in the next four innings, despite
singles in the third an sixth innings that amount to nothing,
Rivera took control of the game. However, Iona erupted for two
runs in their top 7th inning, but left the base loaded in this
hair-pulling half inning.
