07.26.09 St. Athanasius Blue Sox vs. Parkville Eagles -At. Athanasius defeated the Eagles of Parkville Youth Organization with great defense, good pitching and timely hitting by the Blue Sox to prevent Eagles from flying to make the final.
Head Coach Bill Finn combined the arms of starter Ray Lopez (44) and relief pitcher Mike Gutierrez (14) to stop the Eagles as Joe Garthaffner (1), John Frazzetta (2), Gutierrez, and Perez hit the ball well to take advantage of Parkville, which ran out of pitching in the top of the 5th inning.
When the 5th inning started the Sox were down by a score of 4 to 2. By the end of the inning, the Sox scored six runs, mostly on walks, to take the lead that they never relinquished, as the Sox' defense took over in the late innings to defeat the Eagles 10 -4.
The Blue Sox will travel to represent St. Athanasius in the 2009 Gowanus Baseball League Championship, 11-12 year old division championship, a trip these young sluggers would hope someday that someone would write a book about or make a movie about or make a video game about them.
Parkville will go home to play baseball on their Nintendo or X-box, while the Blue Sox will win trophies.
