07.18.09 Long Island Tigers vs. Bonnie Cougars -Herbie "The Legend" Cruz Jr.'s Bonnie Youth Organization Cougars defeated the Long Island Tigers 3-2 in a hard fought battle to win the New York City Association Playoff.
The all-seventeen year olds Cougars played in the 18 and up division to remain the only undefeated team in the tournament.
Coming at one loss in the tournament, the Tigers gave up two runs in the top of the first inning, but scored two of their own to tie the score at 2-2. The score remained tied, as both teams failed on given opportunities. With John Wutzell on the mound for the Long Island, the Bonnies felt that many pick-off calls should have been called balks in their favor. Wutzell picked three Cougars to erase all early hopes for the wild cats from Brooklyn to overcome the wild cats from the Island.
Brooklyn exploded for one run in the top of the sixth inning or a line drive double in the right centerfield gap by #31, Stan Simmons, that score #6, Louis Mastandrea, who was the designated runner for the catcher, #51, Melvin Rios, who reach First base on a walk. The cougars failed to add more runs, despites having men at first and second and no out in that same inning.
They continued their patterned in the top of the seven inning, however, as the Tigers failed to score in the bottom of the six and seven innings on gutsy pitching of # 11 Justin Pupa with the help of outstanding defense of #25 Anderson Mateo in right field and Simmons, himself , in centerfield, the Bonnies solo run in the six proved to be the only run they needed to win the game for a trip to Troy New York to participate in the 2009 American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) North Atlantic Senior Regional. The the winner of that tournament will travel to the World Series in sunny New Mexico.
This trip would not be the first for "The Legend," as he has had many trips in many a Regional of various age group.
